Visa sponsorship means an employer officially backs your right to work in a country: filing the petition, paying government fees and confirming no suitable local candidate was found. It is the main channel of labor migration to the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. How sponsorship works in the main countries
US H-1B: electronic lottery registration ($215 per entry), about 340,000 registrations for 85,000 slots in 2025; employer fees run $2,000–5,000+. UK Skilled Worker: the employer needs a sponsor licence (£574/£1,579), issues a Certificate of Sponsorship for £525, and the minimum salary is £41,700 from July 2025 (with discounts for shortage occupations). Germany: EU Blue Card from €50,700/year (€45,934 for shortage occupations, 2025), no sponsor licence needed. Canada: an LMIA (CAD 1,000) or LMIA-exempt streams (ICT, CUSMA).
How to find a sponsoring employer
Target companies with a sponsorship track record: the UK register of licensed sponsors is public (over 100,000 companies), and H-1B databases (myvisajobs, H-1B disclosure data) show who files petitions and how many. Focus on shortage fields: IT, engineering, healthcare, construction.
