Portugal — gateway to Europe and a path to an EU passport
Portugal is one of the most accessible EU countries for obtaining residency. Three main routes: D7 (for retirees and those with passive income), D8 (for digital nomads) and Golden Visa (for investors). Portuguese citizenship and an EU passport — after 10 years of lawful residence (7 for EU and CPLP nationals; rule in force since 19 May 2026).
D7 Visa — for passive income
D7 suits people with regular passive income of at least the Portuguese minimum wage (€920/month in 2026): pensions, rent, dividends, royalties. You need to actually live in Portugal. The NHR regime has been closed to new applicants since 2024; its successor IFICI (20% for 10 years) is available only for qualifying work in science, innovation and technology.
Path to EU Citizenship
Since 19 May 2026 naturalisation requires 10 years of lawful residence (7 for EU and CPLP nationals), counted from the issue date of the first permit. Requirements: Portuguese at A2 level or higher, a clean record and genuine ties to the country. The Portuguese passport grants visa-free entry to 187 countries, including the USA and UK.
