The asylum interview is the decisive stage of the process: an officer assesses the credibility of your story and whether it meets the 1951 Refugee Convention criteria (persecution on grounds of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group). In the US it is a USCIS interview (affirmative) or an immigration court hearing, in Germany — the Anhörung at BAMF, in France — an OFPRA interview. How the interview works
USA: Form I-589 is filed free of charge within 1 year of entry; the USCIS interview lasts 2–4 hours with an interpreter; a work permit can be requested 150 days after filing. Germany: the BAMF hearing takes 1 to 6+ hours and is recorded verbatim. France: the OFPRA interview is usually scheduled within several months of registration. Canada: a hearing before the IRB (Refugee Protection Division). Everywhere the key criterion is a consistent, detailed account.
Common applicant mistakes
Contradictions between the written application and oral answers are the top reason for denials. Other mistakes: exaggerating facts, a memorized "script", lack of documentary evidence (medical records, summonses, publications, photos), not knowing the dates and details of your own story, inaccurate interpretation. We run 2–3 mock interviews with feedback, help collect country evidence and prepare witnesses.
