Types of residence permit in Turkey

The tourist residence permit, step by step
- •Book an appointment at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr (slots are taken 1–3 months in advance)
- •Rent housing with an official, notarized contract
- •Health insurance covering the full permit period (minimum 1 year)
- •Pay the state fee (~₺4,000–8,000 depending on duration)
- •Submit documents to the Müdürlüğü (Migration Directorate)
- •Receive the residence card: within 2–6 weeks
⚠️ Current for 2025: restrictions for foreigners apply in popular Istanbul districts (Esenyurt, Başakşehir, Bakırköy) — those with more than 20% foreign residents. Choose neighborhoods with a lower concentration of expats.
Citizenship through real estate
If your goal is Turkish citizenship (rather than just a residence permit), the fastest route is a property purchase of $400,000 or more. Citizenship is granted within 3–6 months, with no residence requirements.
