Moving a pet abroad is one of the most stressful parts of relocation for many families. Every country has its own requirements, and breaking any of them can mean denied entry or a lengthy quarantine. This guide covers everything you need to know.
The universal document package
- •An international veterinary passport
- •A microchip (ISO 11784/11785): mandatory for the EU and most countries
- •Rabies vaccination: at least 21 days before travel, within its validity period
- •A rabies antibody test (for the UK, Australia, Japan, New Zealand)
- •Veterinary certificate Form No. 1 (from a state veterinarian)
- •An import permit (for some countries)
- •Proof of parasite treatment (for some countries)
Requirements by country
- •🇪🇺 EU (Germany, Spain, France...): microchip + rabies vaccination + EU Pet Passport
- •🇦🇪 UAE: veterinary passport + vaccinations + a permit from MOCCAE (Ministry of Climate Change)
- •🇬🇧 UK: antibody test (30+ days after vaccination) + parasite treatment 1–5 days before entry
- •🇹🇷 Turkey: the standard package + a health certificate from a vet
- •🇬🇪 Georgia: minimal paperwork — one of the easiest entries
- •🇦🇷 Argentina: veterinary passport + health certificate + arrival via Buenos Aires
💡 Plan B: if you can't get the documents ready in time, some countries allow temporary entry with a pet on a deposit, provided the requirements are met within 30–60 days. Check with the consulate.
Flying: in the cabin or in the hold
- •In the cabin: small animals only (up to 8 kg including the carrier); cost $50–200
- •In the hold (cargo): for large dogs; a heated compartment
- •Turkish Airlines: one of the best carriers for animals
- •Emirates: accepts pets in cargo only
- •Transit: check the transit country's rules — some require separate documents
